CHAPTER EIGHT
SOMETHING else occurred to Georgie as she slowly made her way back up the stairs. Estelle’s bedroom was at the back of the house…
Which meant there was no possible way that Jed’s grandmother could have been a witness to that affectionate parting he had claimed was for Grandie’s benefit!
Georgie just didn’t understand any of it. Not Jed’s reason for kissing her. Not her response to it. Certainly not the jealousy she felt at knowing Jed was having lunch with Sukie Lawson!
To feel jealousy over Jed’s date with another woman surely she would also have to feel love? And she certainly no longer loved Jed!
Then why had she allowed him to kiss her earlier? Worse—she had responded to it!
Well, it certainly wasn’t because she loved him, she affirmed decidedly. Any love she had once felt towards Jed had been well and truly killed two years ago.
How could it not have been, after the things she had learnt about him…?
She remembered that Jed had been away on one of his frequent lengthy business trips, to the L & J Hotel in Hawaii that time. She had gone to stay with her grandfather and Estelle for a few days, to alleviate some of the boredom of being in their apartment on her own.
She had been absolutely stunned when she’d opened the daily newspaper over breakfast and seen a photograph of Jed in the gossip pages, standing next to the beautiful blonde actress Mia Douglas.
‘What is it, Georgina?’ Her grandfather had leaned concernedly across the table when he saw the distress she hadn’t been quick enough to hide from his astute gaze.
Georgie silently handed him the newspaper, feeling as if she had just had all the breath knocked out of her body. Jed and the actress Mia Douglas?
It couldn’t be. Jed had telephoned her only the previous afternoon. Admittedly it had only been a brief conversation, but he had made no mention then of being in Los Angeles. Georgie had assumed he was still in Hawaii.
Assumed…
Yes. But Jed hadn’t actually said that was where he was, had he? In fact he had really only said it must be a brief telephone call because he didn’t have a lot of time. Because he’d been in a hurry to get back to Mia Douglas…?
She didn’t understand. Admittedly, Jed had been gone almost a week now, but the night before his departure he had made love to her until dawn. In truth, after months of their not having made love at all, Georgie had been surprised at his ardour, but had assumed it to be because, despite the strain which had developed in their relationship just recently, he was actually as reluctant to be apart from her as she was from him.
Assumed.
There was that word again.
Maybe it hadn’t been because he would miss her at all; maybe it had been his guilty conscience because he’d already known he was going to be unfaithful to her…?
‘I shouldn’t take too much notice of this.’ Her grandfather threw the newspaper down in disgust.
